New York dairyman receives the 2026 A.C. “Whitie” Thompson Award
MADISON, WIS. – Jack Ross of Lewis County, N.Y., was presented the 2026 A.C. “Whitie” Thompson Award during the 59th World Dairy Expo®, recognizing a lifetime of dedication to dairy cattle, community service and mentorship of the next generation.
Ross has earned a reputation throughout the dairy industry as a person who is willing to do whatever needs to be done. A cattleman, mentor, community leader, plumber and devoted grandfather, Ross has spent his career developing cattle and people while giving his time and talents to the communities around him.
Ross got his start as a Lewis County 4-H member, where his talents were recognized by Herb Staring. Staring became a mentor to Ross, guiding him through the years and helping shape the cattleman he would become. Ross has carried that same spirit of mentorship throughout his career, continuing to work with young people throughout New York and beyond, including Jason and Jordan Thomas, Sam Van Buren and many others.
While Ross works full time as a plumber, his commitment to the dairy industry remains a significant part of his life. At home, he raises approximately 15 heifers, many of which are for his four grandchildren, whom he adores. His vacations are often spent at dairy shows, where he continues to work with cattle and support the people around him.
Ross' commitment to his community is equally strong. The Lewis County Fair has been a fortunate recipient of his broad skill set and willingness to serve. From serving on the fair board to reworking the fairgrounds' water system and helping raise funds to build barns, Ross has played an important role in helping the Lewis County Fair remain a thriving summer tradition in the community.
Ross continues to develop his own Rossdale Farms string in Lewis County and at the New York State Fair. Throughout his career, he has worked numerous national sales and alongside multiple prominent show strings, including Denny Ferguson; Randy Frasier and Elmvue Holsteins; Willis Conard and Ridgedale Holsteins; Richard Green and Greenlea; and Oakfield Corners Dairy.
His work has helped prepare multiple All-Americans, seven Red & White Expo Grand Champions and one Holstein Expo Grand Champion. Among the cattle that have been highlights of his career are KY Blue Rubens Marla, Yursden Kite Caramac, Macs Acres Fannie, Greenlea Rub Marlene and Lovhill Sidekick KandyCane.
While Ross' accomplishments in the show ring are significant, those who know him best admire him for qualities that cannot be measured by a banner or championship. He is known for his hard work, willingness to step into any role needed and patience with young people who are learning.
Ross' influence on the dairy industry is rooted in the time he gives to others. He has continued the example set by his own mentor by sharing his knowledge with young people, helping them gain confidence and teaching them the skills needed to succeed in the show ring and beyond.
Humble, honest and direct, Ross is a gentleman and family man at heart. Whether he is working as a plumber, caring for cattle, helping a young exhibitor, supporting the Lewis County Fair or spending time with his grandchildren, he approaches each task with the same willingness to lend a hand.
For his lifelong dedication to dairy cattle, service to his community, commitment to mentoring the next generation and willingness to take on whatever role is needed, Jack Ross is a fitting recipient of the 2026 A.C. “Whitie” Thompson Award.
