California dairyman wins the 2026 Klussendorf Award
MADISON, WIS. – Hank Van Exel III of Lodi, Calif., was presented the 84th Klussendorf Award during the 59th World Dairy Expo®. The award, considered the highest recognition given to a dairy cattle showman in the United States, recognizes individuals who exemplify the qualities of character, sportsmanship, ability and endeavor.
The award is presented in memory of Arthur B. Klussendorf, an outstanding showman of his time who became a model for those who followed him. This year's recipient was selected by members of the Klussendorf Memorial Association, established in 1937, during its annual meeting in Madison, Wis. Van Exel received the silver trophy designed by Tiffany Jewelers of New York City.
A second-generation dairyman, Van Exel has devoted much of his life to dairy farming alongside his family, demonstrating a lifelong passion for dairy cattle and the industry. His love for dairy cattle even played a role in connecting him with his future wife, who was serving as a dairy princess and exhibiting the champion cow at the 1976 California State Holstein Show.
Throughout his career, Van Exel has been a dedicated advocate for the U.S. dairy industry. His commitment extends beyond breeding high-quality dairy cattle to supporting dairy shows, sales, judging contests and other industry activities. Through these efforts, he has helped generate enthusiasm for the dairy industry and encourage the next generation of dairy enthusiasts.
Van Exel's contributions include chairing numerous dairy show committees and judging Holsteins and Jerseys at some of the world's most prestigious dairy cattle shows. His judging experience spans 15 countries and includes World Dairy Expo, the Royal Winter Fair, the Euro Championship and Black and White Days in Australia.
His leadership extends to several prominent dairy organizations. Van Exel has served as president of the California Holstein Association and as a director of Holstein Association USA. In 2026, he was elected vice president of Holstein Association USA, continuing his commitment to advancing the dairy industry.
In addition to his leadership and judging accomplishments, Van Exel has owned and developed numerous All-California and All-American nominated animals in both the Holstein and Jersey breeds. Exels Holsteins and Jerseys has exhibited Reserve Grand Champions in both breeds at World Dairy Expo. Among his most notable accomplishments is Rosiers Blexy Goldwyn Blexy, the 2017 Supreme Champion at World Dairy Expo.
While his accomplishments in the show ring and contributions to dairy organizations are significant, Van Exel's dedication to sharing his knowledge and passion for dairy cattle has made a lasting impact on the industry. His commitment to promoting dairy cattle, supporting fellow breeders and encouraging future generations reflects the values of the Klussendorf Award.
For his lifelong dedication, leadership and sportsmanship, Van Exel is a deserving recipient of the 84th Klussendorf Award.
